The Two-Year-Old in Tears

Crying is how a two-year-old tells you what she can’t yet put into words.

A two-minute read, three things to try, for children under 5.

Where to start

  • Check hunger, tiredness, pain, illness and overwhelm before deciding it is misbehaviour.
  • Check the ordinary causes first. If you think she is unwell or in pain, answer that before you treat the crying as behaviour, and do not wait to see whether it settles. In England, Scotland and Wales, call 111. In Northern Ireland, contact your GP surgery during surgery hours, or your regional GP out-of-hours service when the surgery is closed. For a life-threatening emergency, call 999.
  • That is worth a call to your health visitor or GP rather than a wait for the next appointment.

The rest of the tip, with more to try and why it works, is in the library.
