Your First GP Visit in the UK
Register with a GP as soon as you arrive; in the UK, almost all NHS care starts there.
A two-minute read, three things to try.
Where to start
- Register with a local GP practice as soon as you arrive.
- Bring a short written list, because UK GP appointments run on ten-minute slots.
- For families new to the UK, the GP is the practical starting point for almost every contact with the NHS, and it’s the part of the system least like its equivalent in many other countries.
- The GP is your child’s primary care doctor, and in nearly every case the same doctor will be the route to any specialist she eventually sees.
The rest of the tip, with more to try and why it works, is in the library.
It goes with
- The Conversations Parents Avoid. For parents who need to tell their child something hard and don’t know how to start.
The first chapter you open here is free to read in full.
