The School Holiday You Are Doing Alone
The summer holiday as the only parent is draining, so plan for what you can keep up.
A two-minute read, three things to try, for ages 5 to 16.
Where to start
- Plan a summer you can keep up, with the same park and the same routine.
- Gingerbread, the UK charity for single parents, has written guidance for the holidays, and free local and online groups of parents who’ve done these summers themselves. If the third week of August is looking unmanageable, you can ring a confidential helpline for any parenting or family worry. Coram Family Lives, 0808 800 2222. Mon-Fri 9am-9pm; weekends 10am-3pm; closed bank holidays. Outside those hours the line is closed. Samaritans answer at any hour on 116 123, and Shout answer if you text the word SHOUT to 85258. Help is free.
The rest of the tip, with more to try and why it works, is in the library.
It goes with
- When Parents Separate. For parents in the middle of a separation who are watching closely to see how their child is coping.
The first chapter you open here is free to read in full.
